On-Site Soba Making
You can add a visiting soba artisan to your stay. The artisan comes to your villa at DAISEN UMIHOTARU and makes soba right in front of you, to be enjoyed fresh on the spot. You are equally welcome to simply watch and taste. It is especially recommended for lunch during a multi-night stay, and is also available at dinner. The artisan speaks English, so international guests can join with ease.
Pricing
The base is a meal plan — freshly made soba served by the artisan. If you wish, you can add a hands-on soba-making experience on top of it.
Meal plan (base — for all staying guests)
Enjoy freshly made soba on the spot. Counted by the number of staying guests.
Soba-making experience (optional)
An add-on for those who would like to try making soba themselves — not everyone in your group needs to join. Whether adult or child, it is +¥500 per person.
The experience cannot be booked on its own; it is added to the meal plan.
Examples (per person)
Available for groups of 4 to 14 guests. Meals are counted by the number of staying guests.
About the soba-making experience
Under the artisan's guidance, you can try making soba yourself. Enjoy what you make on the spot, and take home anything you cannot finish as a souvenir. If you would like this, please add the soba-making experience (+¥500 per person) to the base plan as described above.
How to book this option
After booking your stay, please email the following two points to umihotaru.daisen@gmail.com.
1. Your preferred date and start time (please allow about 30 minutes of preparation from the start time)
2. How many of your group would like to try making soba themselves (+¥500 per person)
The number of meals is calculated automatically from the number of guests staying, so no advance notice is needed. As we prepare the buckwheat flour ahead of time, please let us know how many will take part in the soba-making experience at least one week before your stay.
A local specialty of Daisen
What is Daisen soba?
The roots of Daisen soba reach back roughly 800 years. In the Kamakura era, Kiko Shonin, a renowned monk of Daisenji Temple, is said to have performed a sacred ritual before the Emperor while still wearing his straw cape and hat, healing the Emperor's illness. The episode came to be remembered as "the secret rite of the straw cape."
Kiko Shonin also distributed protective charms for cattle and horses to his followers, and is said to have encouraged livestock grazing and soba cultivation across the wide foothills of Mt. Daisen. This became the origin of the "Daisen Cattle and Horse Market," later regarded as one of Japan's three great livestock markets.
Since then, soba-making has lived on in the foothills of Mt. Daisen, with a distinctive method that grinds the buckwheat all the way to its inner husk. The result is a deep, dark color and a rustic, full-bodied flavor — "Daisen Soba" as it reaches our table today.
